Have a 99 30hp johnson. Motor has been running fine until today when I went to start it before a fishing trip. Motor turns over but will not fire. I poured gas into carb and motor will start then shut off when the fuel is burned up. Checked the fuel line into the fuel pump and it is getting fuel into the pump and that is as far as I was able to go due to night fall. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated in trouble shooting this problem.

You can pull the fuel line that exits the pump and turn the engine over. Wear safety glasses and get ready for a mess.

Fuel pumps rarely fail. If I were betting, I'd say you carburetor is fouled. The only way to correct it is to disassemble and clean it.

if you spray fuel in the carb and it starts... we know its a fuel delivery problem. Check your carb. It seems to be the culprit most of the time.

if the carbs have not been cleaned and rebuilt, they are due, especially if the motor is used rarely. float needle sticking, clogged jets, etc.

Carb was just cleaned by authorized dealer 6 weeks ago. I was messing with it a little this morning and after I poured out the water/fuel seperator and re-installed I'm getting no pressure in the priming ball. Checked the fuel line and it is fine. Could it be the portable 6 gallon fuel tank.

Could be the bulb too. Pull the fitting out of the tank and see if the screen on the end is plugged. When you squeeze the bulb, can you hear gas going in the carb? Your vent is open on the tank isn't it? Loosen the cap and see if it pumps up. Just put a motor back together that I had rebuilt the carb on before tearing down..couldn't get it to run...took carb off and apart and in the idle adjustment area it was plugged with some black crud. I took the line going to the pump and put it in a can and pumped about four squeezes, hooked it back up and took the one to the carb, put it in the can and gave it about 4 squeezes....put it back together and it runs like a champ. Good luck.

If it is the cartridge type, pouring it out does not solve anything. It needs to be replaced. A full fuel water seperator could have fouled the carb again.

Is the vent on the tank open?

Thanks for all the help. I got if figured out. It was the fuel line from the water/fuel seperator had a small pin hole it right before the fuel bulb.
