Ya know CSS - Coach's Son Syndrome

My sons 6th grade football team, the coach's son started at quarterback even though he is 4'10" and 80 lbs and cant see over the linemens heads. Finally on the third game they put in the guy who should have been quarterback from the start. Very talented kid who will go far in sports.

But now the coaches son is playing tight end and trying to block a guy that was 5'6" and about 140 lbs. It was amusing and frustrating at the same time. Sadly coach started yelling at him to do better. The poor kid just didnt have a chance against someone nearly twice his size. I didnt shed too many tears cause the kid already has a jerk attitude. Whats really frustrating is that there are other bigger kids sitting on the bench who dont even get a chance to try. As a side note I have seen this same kid pitch and he is a great pitcher.

On a previous baseball team, a different coach tried to make his son be a pitcher and made him leadoff hitter and two years later he still cant hit or pitch. I feel sorry for the kid cause it cant help his confidence. He was a good kid, just not good at baseball.

Re: Anyone else suffering from CSS?

You see this happin EVERY TIME a coach has a kid playing. Little league too. It called "If you want your kid to play ,you be the coach" syndrome. As long as your kid gets something good out of it dont worry about winning, it wont do any good.

Actually I have seen some coaches be very unbiased. My sons little league coach had his son play in several positions, but he never started a game as pitcher even though he was a pretty good pitcher. In the last playoff game, he had no choice but to put in his son as pitcher (all other pitchers not able to pitch due to pitch count rule) and the poor kid lost the game giving away 4 runs.

Re: Anyone else suffering from CSS?

Having coached my sons basketball team a couple of years, I would like to think that I was fair. Although I do admit there was a little jerk that I had to really fight my instinct to kick in the butt. :) I was actually harder on my son than the other players, just to stop any perceived favoritism. I guess being harder on him worked though, he just turned 11 and is 5'4" and 130lbs. One of the coaches on another team nicknamed him "The Wall" and it stuck, because nobody moves him out of the paint.

On a side note, my son went to the tryout for the select league team yesterday. There was a dad there that was kissing butt unmercifully(there are only 3 openings on the team). His poor kid is good, but not great, dad on the other hand imagines himself to be a stud player. All 5' 5" of him. The coach held a scrimmage, but only seven kids had been invited, so superman volunteered to play with the kids.

During the scrimmage, just to impress everyone, he was bouncing the ball between his legs and putting it behind his back. Now the funny part of this is that he is short and stocky. He has to hop in the air to get the ball to go between his legs and cannot reach around his back to get the ball behind him. The highlight of his exhibition was when he lost the ball trying to get it behind his back and couldnt get it to bounce right, ending up on the other end of the court. The other dads and I almost fell down laughing. :D

As for the tryouts, there will be a couple more. Some of those kids are really good. If my son makes it, it will be an accomplishment. If not, there is the regular community league.

My son knows if I'm coaching or leading anything he is involved in, he better do his best at all times or he'll be sitting on the bench or not involved in the activity at hand. Keep in mind I am saying "do his best" and not saying be outstanding. I use the same ideals with everyone else's kid too. Do your best 100% of the time and I will play you. Goof around or slack off at all and you'll sit the bench no matter how much of a "star" you are.

That is the way it should be. I wasnt very popular with some parents, because i rotated the kids, everyone that tried their best got to play, win lose or draw.

Re: Anyone else suffering from CSS?

I dont have any problem with the coach's son playing as long as he can do the job.

Not only is a coach supposed to ask 100% of his players, he is also supposed to determine how best to use that 100%.

My son would give 100% as quarterback, but I seriously doubt he could be very good considering he is a chubby slow lineman. If the coach put my son in as quarterback I would certainly question his motives. Just the same way I question his motives in putting his son in to block a kid 1.5 times his size.

If we were playing baseball, I would expect him to put his son in at pitcher cause the kid can throw darn good.
