I have a 1983 Johnson 50hp (J50BELCTA) that needs a lower unit. I have located a parts motor but it is 4 hours away. Before I buy it I want to know if the lower units will interchange. Here's the homework I've done: the driveshaft, gearcase & bearing assembly, and the prop shaft have the same part numbers, which is good. But on the lists of parts ther are some things that are not the same for both motors. For example, the water pump kit for both motors is not the same. The parts motor I have located is a 1978 johnson (55EL78S). Will the lower unit from the 55hp fit on the 50 hp. Please help! Thanks, as always!
