Hello everyone ;

I'm new to these forums and i'm also a proud owner of a boat...
Anyways Here is my Problem.....
I Had Just Purchased a Boat That had sat for approximately a Year and a Half.... The motor Is a 1972 Johnson 40 Horse Anniversary Edition..I bought new plugs for the motor and installed them ....I checked for a Spark and Nothing....So after fighting with the flywheel all day and finally getting it off I ended up is Changing the condensor,coils and Points....after doing so The motor Fired Up......Now here is the Problem...The first time i had tried to start the motor( when there was no spark) i used the Ignition....After putting the condensor coils and points in the only way i can start the motor is by jump starting it from the Solenoid.....Now I put a New Solenoid in and still the Same thing......For some reason my ignition is not working now and i'm totaly confused....Can anybody help me out i'm stumped on this one...
and thanx for the time to read my story....

The Model # is 40EL72E

unplug the wiring harness, and clean the contacts, big plug. also check the inline fuse, should be short 20 amp fuse, in the red line going to the control off the solenoid. it controls electricity to the control.

Re: Help Please ..I'm going Crazy

So, did you put in the correct type of solenoid, or did you put in a car solenoid? If you put in a car solenoid, you just burned up the safety switch. Car solenoids and outboard solenoids look the same but are different inside. The safety switch may have been the trouble instead of the solenoid in the first place.
The safety switch prevents starting with an advanced throttle position. It is on the side, operated by a cam on the magneto plate.

Also check your ignition for corrosun, might not be getting a good contact after sitting that long.
