Dear boaters,

I just took delivery of a new Key West boat. First day out on the water my gas guage goes down to half and the boat promptly runs out of gas. I call SeaTow and buy 5 gal and it starts up and I go home.

My first thought was the gauge is busted and the boat was actually out of gas. However when I go to fill it up it only takes a few gals.

Call the place I bought it and they think that the fuel pickup line must have a hole in it half way down the tube. Does that make sense?

This boat is under warranty and I will probably let the professionals take care of it.... but I would like to know what problems I have before turning it over. And if it is as simple as replacing a hose... I am handy with tools.

My boat is a Key West 152 CC with a 40HP Evinrude Etec. The fuel tank is fixed.

Thanks

Sam

It's under warranty. Let them fix.
A hole or split pickup line could be the likely problem. If the pickup is a flexible line with a weighted pickup it could hung up and not dangling all the way to the bottom of the tank.

It is certainly a possible explanation. If it is not too far to tow for service I'd let them do this one and have them handle anything else you might have noticed while there. IMHO this is one of the reasons to buy new, I'd take advantage of that. Also, get them to pay your Sea Tow bill . . .
