I have a 1978-35 Evinrude. The engine sat for 9 years unused. Prior to storage it had new coils, wiring, starter motor, cables, etc. The engine had 94 and 100 PSI on the cylinders. I got the motor running. I changed the water pump, head cover gasket, no thermostat installed, cleaned the carb low and high speed jet, changed lower unit fluid. The motor ran for 1 hour on 2 separate runs then stalled and would not start. I found water in the bottom cylinder. I removed the cylinder head and found a blown head gasket. With the new head gasket in place the motor has 140 PSI in each cylinder. The motor immediately started and ran for 15 minutes then backfired and stalled. Now will not start at all. Electric starter will only turns over continously without the plugs installed and with no water. Install the plugs and put in water and the motor will only turn over slowly for short 3-5 second bursts before the starter motor kicks out. The motor acts like water is in the cylinders. Pull the plugs- no water. It still has 140 PSI compression on both cylinders. There is an oily substance that is coming out of the bottom of the power head. Tried to pull exhaust cover- 3 bolts stuck. At some point in time the head looks to have over heated as the green paint is now gold in color- Do I have a cracked block? Where do I look next? Is the 140 commpression too high? Will not pull start either. Help
