I appreciate any help/suggestions anyone can give me on this. I have a 2.7 HP Cruise and Carry outboard motor. It starts at the first pull and runs and idles fine. After some time of running (can't pinpoint time as I shut motor off when anchoring boat for fishing) the motor just shuts off by itself. It does not appear to be a fuel problem as there is still fuel in the bowl of the carbutator each time I checked when the motor shut off. The strange part is that I could re-start the motor after one or 2 pulls, although sometimes it took more pulls. The motor would shut off again after 1 minute of running or so and I could then re-start it again, thank goodness. Doing this repeatedly finally brought me back to the dock.

When I checked the spark plug when it was doing this, the spark plug looked clean. Yet I suspect it to be electrical in nature somehow. Could it be a capacitor heating up, preventing proper voltage to the spark plug?

I am taking the engine apart and doing a thorough cleaning of carburator and piston and cylinder (de-carb) but still feel shaky about the whole thing. Hate to be stuck on the lake and having to row all the way back from a fishing trip.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

If it restarts almost imeadiately I'm inclined to think fuel supply.
Gas is flowing to the carb but not fast enough to keep it running.
when it shuts off the carb refills and it starts.Check from tank to carb.Be sure the tank vent is open and working. There may be a filter or screen on the outlet in the tank could be dirty.

Thank you Steelspike,

I had thought the same: that it was a fuel problem. But that is why I checked the carburator bowl each time it shut off. There was plenty of fuel in the carburator bowl. It even shut off when I idled the motor (very little fuel consumption). That is why I thought it was in the ignition. But since the manufacturer has gone out of business for quite some time now, it is hard to find a solution for the ignition although one would think that there would be other ignition systems available, just to power a sparkplug? I am at wits end.

Thank you so much for your thoughts though.

I'm not familiar with this particular motor, but what you are describing sounds exactly like what happens when a Condenser or Coil goes bad. They work fine until they warm up, and then they die. Once they cool a bit, they will operate again (until they warm again). If your motor has standard ignition with points/condenser, I would start there first.
