8hp Evinrude Problems

I have an 1989 8hp Evinrude that I had serviced at a local repair shop in the off season. Before service the motor was tough to start and didn't idle right, but once in gear and under load it ran fine. After I took it in I found out that the motor had the wrong choke and the wrong carb. Over $600 later I figured the motor would run like brand new after putting the right parts on it. I just recently had the chance to take it out and the motor fired up and idled good. The problem is when in gear and under load the motor doesn't reach the same power it used to produce and cuts in and out and wants to stall. I haven't called repair shop since it was so long since they serviced it and don't think they would do anything for me. Is this maybe a matter of adjusting the carb or what????

What do you mean link and sink? Also the motor was only started at the repair shop so I could hear it idle and after that once by myself. This is the only gas (that was brand new) that has been run through the carb. The motor only sat for 2-3 months between the starts?

Without stabilizer. Some gas will separate and gum things up in a month. Always use stabilizers

Re: 8hp Evinrude Problems

I've never done it before the motor was serviced and never had a problem. Not saying that this couldn't be the problem with the new carb but I really think it is something else. When I back off on the throttle the motor starts to run fine. When I go almost full throttle then it starts to back off and loose power. This is why I think the carb isn't adjusted right. I'll try and clean the carb. get brand new gas and try it again.

Welcome! IMO the shop should help you get it running right, especially after you already donated six bills to their cause. Unless they are total d-bags they should help you. I would call them up. Oh and check out the carb FAQ. Good luck!:)

that's exactly the symptom my 8hp had before cleaning the high-speed jet. You've got a dirty carb.

To check link and sync for the high end. (with motor off) Set to min throttle. Note the position of the pin on the carb throttle shaft. Now, advance to full throttle. Note the position of the pin. Did it rotate 90-degrees? If not you need to set full throttle properly.
