I have been looking at the new GMC 2500 HD Sierra Diesel extended cab trucks and would like some opinions on mileage with the diesel.

I have a 12,500# boat and trailer package so I need a heavy duty truck, however I do alot of highway driving ( much more than towing ) and so I'm concerned about my mileage.

The cost of diesel over gas in our area is now about 40 cents per gallon more.

So let's hear from you truck guys !!!

Thanks,

I tow with a 2003 F-250 6.0L. I get 19mpg highway/16mpg city empty. Towing my 9000lb boat and trailer I get from 10 to 14mpg depending on if it is flat or mountains. From what I hear GM's diesel gets better mpg than the Ford.

I think the GMs do get better mileage than the Ford or Dodges.
The 3500 Chevys we have at work towing 40ft car hauler trailers are getting 12 to 15 mpg loaded. The new Allison 6 speed is one great towing tranny!!;)
Out of the 3 i would buy a Chevy,Although i drive one of the Dodges at work and the Cummins would pull a house i still prefer the Chevys. They ride the best and have the most comfortable seats.
I drove one of the Chevys empty to the northeast and was getting 20 to 21 mpg highway.

Hey Gary, wait till you get the new 6.7L Cummins.
Just did a interstate drive of 500 miles, +/-.
24.7 gallons to fill.
That's great on a truck this size and still new.
I like.

Thanks guys for your responses. I would still like to hear from someone who does a lot of highway driving with the diesel. I took a 2008 GMC Sierra Extended cab diesel 4x4, SLT package for a ride this past weekend.

Wow what a truck! Just concerned about the highway mileage as I do about 150 miles per day.

I had the opportunity over the last few months to drive (rent) both a new GM with the duromax and the new Dodge diesel (although I'm not sure if it's the ultra-new 6.7 litre or not).
They were both beautiful machines. However I liked the throttle response better out of the GM...very quick (My wife loved the truck and Diesel...go figure, shes about 5-1"/105 lbs and she wanted the truck!!). The mileage was reasonably good in both trucks....a little better in the GM. Both were better than I expected and wayyyyyy better than our current home/tow vehicle (01' Dodge 1500 Quad Cab/5.2 litre gas....terrible!!!).
Overall, tho' I had to give it to the GM/Duromax based on just about all factors. That said, I did not work any of these vehicles or tow with them. My assessment was based largely on a relatively short term visit with them.
These days there is no such thing seemingly as a lemon...you couldn't go wrong with either GM/Ford or Dodge they are all premium vehicles it seems. It probably comes down to personal choice more than anything else.
ps: I took the GM/Duromax on a nice long highway/road trip up to Whistler (big ski mountain/resort area, north of Vancouver BC) with some clients. Took that very dubious 'sea to sky' highway with flying colours...and my clients loved the truck too.
Looking forward to seeing what your decision is, keep us posted!!

I hear they are a power house! I can't wait!
The Cummins in the one i drive now is a beast with the Superchips program and the K&N intake kit.It will smoke the tires and get scary sideways with me...
I love out running those little rice burners with it...;) Huge cloud of black smoke then see ya!

Guys,

Your really getting the juices flowing. I hope to be able to make my decision by this weekend. The problem is finding a 2008 on a lot. All of the dealers are having trouble getting deliveries of the new trucks ( at least in my area).

I think that I'm probably going to settle on the GMC extended cab with the dura max, but final pricing will have an awful lot to do with it.

I truely appreciate all of the input !!!

Re: 2007 / 2008 GMC Diesel Extended Cab

Well, over the past two weeks I have been trying to make a deal on either a Ford F-250/ 350 Crew Cab or a GMC 2500HD.

It turns out that the GMC is about $8K more for the same basic truck as the Ford.

So I have attempted to make a deal on an F-250 Crew Cab Lariat, diesel.

Currently we are about $3K apart in what they will do the deal for and what I can afford.

Also, diesel has gone up another ten cents per gallon in my area.... now up to $3.15 per gallon !!!!!

About 45 cents more than regular gas.

Soooo, I'm now wondering if it is worth trying to continue to make the deal or just bite the bullet and get a gas truck... which is well within my budget.

Any thoughts out there ????

in my oppion its worth it to go desil the added mpg esp when towing will make up for the extra price per gallon

Depends on how many miles per year you will use the truck.

I have been looking at the new GMC 2500 HD Sierra Diesel extended cab trucks and would like some opinions on mileage with the diesel.

I consistently get around 22 MPG highway (empty) with my 2006 1 ton Duramax Chevy Crew LB SRW. That drops to 14.5 thru the Cascades with a slide in camper. Your mileage may vary.
