ok I feel i'm fighting a boat and i am guessing it's an easy answer.
not able to have forward and reverse at same adjustment, installed new control cable, adjusted the shift rod. if there was 3/16" more in forward/reverse shifting (push-pull) it would work. the control box is a (73'powershift 2) worked fine on last motor.
thanks, if you solve this i owe you a beer heck,i'll buy you one anyway.

The engine ends of the cables are adjustable. They're called barrels and have a thumb wheel on them. Rotate the thumb wheels to get your adjustment.

Note: You have to loosen the cable hold downs to get the thumb wheels to rotate.

thanks, therein is the problem though.when I adj. the thumb wheel it still comes up short on allowing both gears to fully engage can have one but not both,it seems as though if there was 3/16" more push/pull in control box it would work. (box worked on 65hp johnson) my current thought is to go over system for any slop in box/linkage.

please send advice , oh great ones......

sometimes flattery works !!

thanks,

Your '73' and '76' should be compatible control box wise. The control boxes changed in '79'.

With that said, the control box has bushings, that are plastic, on the lever throws in the control box. If those bushings are missing or damaged your shift/throttle throws will have slop in them.

You split the box by removing the screws from the backside. The shift handle attaching screw is also accessed from the back.

Be careful splitting the box. There is a nuetral check ball in there that likes to fly out.

Re: shifting issue on johnson 115hp

I am having the same issue on my '88 Johnson 70 VRO. Shifting linkage was pretty stiff. Lube and heat freed it up a lot. But still I can only get forward or reverse...not both at the same time. Removed shift cable end from linkage and measured cable travel from reverse through neutral to forward...it was over 1/2" less (about 2 1/2+")than the travel of the cable post on the shifter arm from full reverse to full forward (about 3 3/16"). This explains why motor will only go in to reverse or forward, not both. Oddly...on land, prop will spin fine in reverse and forward, but in the water it will not...only getting forward. Knowledgeable friend says I need a new cable. Control box is a Teleflex...seems to be in good shape, but boat is new to me, and I am new to boats. Still searching. More later.
