Help - '00 Mercury 40 Flooding Problem

I have a 2000 Merc 40, 2 cylinder, 1 carb. that has always run good. The last couple of weeks it floods VERY easy. Up until this weekend I could always get it to run after disconnecting the gas line and blowing the cylinders and plugs out. It would eventuality start and run fine. This weekend it flooded out and I couldn't get it to run past 20 seconds twice. It appears to have a good blue spark on both cylinders and the plugs work fine in another engine. What should I look at next? Carb adjustment? Timing?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You need to clean the carb either the inlet is sticking or the float is.

What do you think about Chem-Dip?

Most modern carb manufactures say don't chem dip use spray or soak in lacquer thinner and blow out

Well I removed the carb this weekend. Carb was pristine.
Looked brand new. Anyway I cleaned with carb cleaner and replaced the inlet needle valve and float shaft. Still have the same problem. I was able to get it going every time by disconnecting the gas line and removing the plugs, drying the plugs and cranking the engine to blow the gas out of the cylinders. Any ideas on what I should try next??

I have since removed the carb again and find nothing. Clean as can be. Any other ideas on what I should try or is this a job for the local Mercury dealer?

Is the choke opening the whole way? Also, I don't think the float is set right.

This model uses the direct inject with a solenoid.
I thought maybe fuel was somehow bleeding through, but when the engine is cold it usually takes a bump of the choke to get it to fire, once the engine is running I can push the choke and it seems to make absolutely no difference in the way it runs. I did check the solenoid and it does click when I press the key. Also, I did adjust the float significantly lower on the bowl, no change.

I am beginning to think that maybe I have an ignition problem or loose wires now. It seems that the engine shakes more than it did before, almost like it is missing sometimes. Probably just the nature of the two cylinder engine. Other than checking all the electrical connections I am out of ideas. I guess I just need to take it to the shop but I am reluctant because it always starts after it has been sitting a couple of days or when it is hot. Its when it has been sitting for a couple of hours that it sputters once and dies. Then after I crank it for 10 seconds or so gas is everywhere coming out of the exhaust.

With all of this in mind, the engine runs perfect and smooth after it starts all the way through top speed.

Try to check the primer for leakage, if you have a set of locking plier pinch the line off and check the fuel pump diaphram if that don't help
