Hi. My name is Irina and my dad recently purchased a boat with a
Johnson 18 HP Sea Horse motor. The motor Model Number is FD14 and the Serial Number is 2119850 My dad put his boat in the water on Friday, but the thing is is that the motor isn't shifting into gear. It's an old motor by the way! I was wondering if you knew what could be wrong with the motor?
Or if you know someone that has any idea what could be wrong with my Dad's motor? Get Back To Me Back A.S.A.P. Thanks A Bunch! ----- Irina

Does the likage run all the way to the propeller? How does he get to where the linkage would have come loose? He wanted to know if there was some sort of a diagram of the motor that he could see. My dad and me don't know jack about boats. But if it's a real simple problem, he'd like to fix it himself.

I believe there is an oval shaped cover on the side of the leg held on with 2 flat head screws. Take this off and peek inside. The linkage is there. This cover is there so you can remove the lower unit easily. Did you change the impeller? If not, you should. If the linkage is disconnected, remove the 5 bolts that hold on the lower unit and it should slide down. The impeller is in the housing that the drive shaft goes through. If it is not disconnected, remove the bottom screw, and the linkage should slide out of the coupler.Get a manual if you do not have one, they are invaluable. Rick

you may want to buy a manual or go to the library ( free) and check out a manual, its invaluable to the novice.it could be as easy as the shear pin ( whoops.... drive pin ! FR) behind the propeller. or could be more complex as the shift linkage. if its more than changing the drive pin i would recommend a manual for you or have someone that has worked on outboards to help you through it. this is probably one of the easier motors to work on but if you dont do procedures correctly you will have problems later. Can you elaborate more on it wont shift?? i assume the motor runs and pumps water.does the shift lever go into forward and reverse?. does it seem loose? . rattle.. I would check the drive pin 1st as it is the easiest to fix, remove the prop nut, remove the propeller. there should be a metal pin going through the prop shaft. its purpose is to shear in case you hit something in the water, therefore protecting the motor and lower unit.

It shifts into forward and reverse, but the boat just doesn't want to move. The motor does runs and it does pump water. I'm trying to find a manual for this particular motor, but I seem to be having a hard time finding one!

I bet someone here has a pic of the shift link cover they can post (seems like I've seen one on here) that will help. In the meantime pull the prop and check the drive pin as described above.

Have you looked behind the oval plate yet? Also, there's a screw on the bottom of the shifter (or side, I forget now as I'm far from home) that tightens and loosens the actual shifter, make sure it's tight and the shifter is actually moving. I have many of those old 18's and they're great engines and easy to work on.

My Dad and I still haven't gotten around to check out the boat since I posted my first message on this forum.

Maybe a spun hub on the prop? There is a rubber bushing between the prop and the hub which can go bad. Mark a line on the hub out to the prop and see if the line moves when you run the motor. Also check the shear pin and make sure it isn't broke. With the motor not running, if you put it in forward or reverse does the prop spin when you turn it by hand?
