below is an ad describing a motor i'm intersted in buying. What i would like to know (as i have no idea about boat motors) is whether or not it would be worth my while buying this (it is cheap) or would the repair cost be too much.

"For sale is a 5hp Mariner motor that cannot be started.

The motor came with the purchase of a small tinny. The previous owner said that the motor had been started about twelve months ago but prior to that had not been started for three years. The motor?s fuel was so stale, no attempt was made to start it at the time.

A friend has cleaned the fuel line and carby and tried a different plug with no success. He did say that he felt it might be a little low on compression but was not sure. The motor is not seized.

As I already have a motor for the tinny I don?t feel inclined to send it to a mechanic and have him spend his time, and my money on it, so it is for sale "as is".

Thankyou and i hope someone could help.

Re: mariner 5hp

I used to have a pristeen Merc 4.5; as pretty and handy an engine I ever owned. But I hated it and didn't keep it very long. Why? Because it was a single cylinder and singles just run and sound like crap, in my opinion.

I just looked in a Mariner sales brochure and the 5 hp is listed as a single cylinder. Regardless of everything else I would not buy it because of that.

If you ever ran a little alternate firing twin, like the 3 hp Johnny of the past, you will never be happy with a single.............my opinion, of course.

Doesn't matter what the sales person says if the engine does not run. Could be anything and usually the worst or it wouldn't be for sale.

Pass on it!
