remove prop shaft and gears

Hi guys, how do you remove the prop shaft and gear assembly, do I need special tools, does the lower unit have to come off? Thank you

You need a spanner wrench to remove the carrier nut and usually can remove the carrier by placing 2 metal plates behind the prop and turning the lock tab plate over and using the prop nut to pull the carrier loose. The unit must be in neutral and the shift shaft remove before pulling the carrier
