I have a 1958 Evinrude Fleetwin 7.5 HP. I've replaced the spard coils, have a complression (as near as I can register) of 40 psi per cylinder, and new plugs. I can't see much of an adjustment for the coils but not sure I'm getting spark. I've mixed oil at 24:1 with unleaded gas. How do I initially adjust the high/low speed controls? I've also replaced a broken shift lever (have to watch gouge prices for parts on old engines). I have found a source for a manual (I think) but have not purchased yet. Any information is much appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you for the guidance tashasdaddy. I don't mean to sound completely stupid but what is the "boss"? One end of the coil had more of an oblong hole but positioning there sure isn't much room, if any, for adjustment. Should there be?

Have you had this motor running? 40 psi is probably too low to run. Hopefully your tester isn't working right and you have at least 60 psi.

I'm including a link to a website that shows how to tune-up a 1954-64 Johnson/Evinrude 5.5 hp, which is essentially identical to your motor. It will show you everything you need to know.

I believe Joe Reeves wrote a good article on how to set the carb on old Johnson/Evinrudes and its located in the FAQ's.

Thanks for the info Senior Chief. I'll recheck the compression and take a look at the link.

"boss" is the raised areas or posts on the mounting plate where the coils are screwed down to. You will see where the posts were machined, right at the ends of the laminated cores of the coils. The coils should be moved back or forth as necessary so that the laminated cores are flush even with those machined mounting posts. Too far out and they will rub on the flywheel magnets, too far in will give a weak spark.

Check the points gap also..\ I have the 54 7.5 and that was preventing spark along with a bad coil wire..

40psi is way too low. I wouldnt waste my time doing anything else to it until you confirmed bad compression and/or fixed the bad compression. A decarb might help.
