safe max rpm

I have been told a few different ranges for the MAX SAFE WOT rpm, like to see what you guys say

1979 rude 140 16 hrs on rebuild , bored .044.. I was told that 5000 was
max WOT for this motor...
like to run it once in a while,but don't want to blow it..

WOT range in the OEM service manual is 4500 to 5500 [Pg. 2-2]. Most of the experts here will recommend that you prop for WOT of 5500 to 5800 RPM to keep from lugging the engine.

Thanks guys,I feel a little safer now,if I had to bring it down to 5000 rpm, I would just go back to a canoe...
