morning folks. and i hope it's a good one for ya. my question is about the bellhouseing shift shaft seal. the new style one that pertrudes into the exhust cavity of the bellhouseing.
for reassembly, per the service manual, the shift shaft seal (old style) is 1st thing to go back into the bellhouseing. my concern is that i won't be able to use my new exhust bellows expander tool once the new style seal is in place. so. at this point i guess my plan is to put the seal in last. at least after i've reconnected the exhust bellows.
i assume i can drive the old bushs out with the bellhouseing mounted to the boat and reinstall the new seal and bushs......

am i going in the right direction?

Yes. I do a lot of bellows and reseals on outdrives and sometimes the manuals order of envents is a little skewed.

I was able to replace mine while in the boat..... and it is much easier to get to the exhaust bellow with the shift shaft out of the way.....

thanks guys. i can't see haveing that new style seal in place at all. it's got to be in the way of the exhust bellows expander tool. so both bushes have been drivin out along with the old seal. which i think was sevicable. to late now. it's gone. i wanted the new style double seal....hope i don't regret it. dought i will. other than dummy me ended up with some glm parts. that i may regret and i reserve judgement.....
deputy, i suppose if i was useing the old style seal. it might as well go in first, as per the service manual. but that new style one. it must interfer with the install of the exhust bellows. so i'm leavein it out till they're connected...

darn bummer, my bellows, shift cable R&R is going to slow. i been haveing to work too much and am being slow to get ontoit. aint even made plans yet for my ujoints which are next. maybe tommorw i can get something done i hope. i'm starting to run out of respectable weather dayz. darn makeing a living is interferein with my boat fun.....;) oh well, got's to pay for it somehow......:)

well the glm shift lever that connects to the bell houseing shift shaft hosed me. i replaced the shift lever and thru screw and fiber washer. the shift shaft itself and the shift shaft seal with the new style 2 seal verison that protudes into the exhust cavity. glm parts. the shift shaft turned nice and free to start with. after the new 2 seal shift shaft seal it turned with more resistance. with the shift shaft lever in place with the screw it was way to tight.....:(.....had issues with tryin to cross thead the aluminim shift shaft lever. after contemplation, i decided to file the bottom of the shift shaft lever...w/ success. turns free enough now, about the resistance of the seals only. just don't think i should have had to do that. mercruiser parts next time...... i don't know, but hope the extra resistance of the double seal isn't to much to effect the shift.......everything moves nice and free other than the new seals. probably ain't gonna find out about the adj. till next spring. gots u-joints left to do. i do want to get it done prior to though.....gonna have to see how the weather treats me..............
