Hello all,

New to the boards and thanks in advance for all the great information and links. I have spent hours thus far and will spend many more in the future as well.

I am the original owner of a 1996 Four Winns 190 Horizon with a Ford Cobra SX 5.0L engine and a Volvo Penta SX outdrive and I am wondering if they sell a repair manual similar to an automotive Haynes or Chilton manual. Anyone know how or if it is possible to obtain one of these?

The Problem:

I let a friend drive and he slammed the throttle from reverse to forward and I heard and felt a loud clunk. Well, the boat still runs and all except now the engine revs up before slamming into gear unless the steering is in a certain position. I found what I believe is the problem located just inside the outdrive housing on the exterior of the transom. The cable housing is "splintered" and I think it needs replacement.

If I am correct, I understand the steering and throttle are linked through a hydraulic or greased cable. I would love to see some diagrams if any exist. Also, I need some guidelines as to the process of replacement. I am mechanically inclined unless you think this is best left to a repair shop.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

That "crushed, smashed, accordian-like" cable housing wouldn't happen to be the cable bellows (supposed to be like that!) would it?

Thanx SBN,

I included it in my profile and thought it would show but I guess not. I'll take a look at that and add it to public view or something.

Anyway, I have the Ford Cobra SX 5.0 L and I have been told by differnet shops that it is a 302 and other things. I have the engine model written down somewhere, I will take a look for it.

45AUTO,

No I am sure it is damaged, maybe splintered would be a better word to describe it. I know what you mean my bellow and it is not that.

Welcomeaboard Mike,
The volvo web site has info on identifying your engine model and year. It took me a while to find that my '96 Four Winns had a '95 302. If you have "HU" in your engine number then you need engine workshop manual 7788856-8 also sx manual 778851-9, fuel system 7788858-4 and electrical 7788857-6. Too bad iboats does not carry these. Make sure you buy orginals, repros are hard to read. Stay far away from cymer but if you're a newbie the seloc has some good info on tune ups etc but it also has some wrong info and drawlings. Telflex has manuals for your shift control online.
Merc manuals are online too and since the ford blocks are the same as vp you might take a look there.
