what saws have you guys used to get the old stringers out? my stringers are mostly rotted where cross braces were notched out but the rest is in pretty good shape. sawzall will take forever.

what about replacing sections of stringers and re-glassing everything? not sure if that would even save any time.

thanks

grinders with diamond blade. you would have to fill in the bad places, and then sister to the side of the splices, get the old stuff out , and do it right. i also have a ryobi 18 volt chain saw.

I am using a Sawzall with a long blade on it to cut the stringer vertically, hitting it till it breaks with a hammer and a chisel to (carefully) clean up around where the stringer meets the hull

I will probably be buying a grinder in the next few days. The chisel method is trying...

Re: cutting old stringers out

just got done for the day with a grinder, not the answer i was hoping to hear!

stenella, harbor freight has one for about $15 and its pretty kick butt so far. i've been using flap discs and they worked good for getting rid of the last inch of old deck around the edge.

I used a cut-off wheel for my angle grinder. You cannot reach all places, but where you can it worked the best. The glass just eats up sawzall blades in no time.

Have a great day,

Rob.

I also used a cut-off blade on a small (4 1/2") grinder. I used the thin one,
.045 for the initial cut, then a 1/4" one to get flush with the hull. Worked great. Makes a lot of dust. Shower time. KR
