Tower of Power Help

I got a 1976 150 Merc that I need help with on the putting the flywheel back on. It came with it off and no marks to line it back up. My question is if I bring the #1 cylinder all the way up to the top of the cylinder and point the timing mark at the #1 plug wire what should my timing pointer point to on the flywheel sticker. I always mark this stuff with a marker when I take them apart so I can avoid this timing thing. Any help would be great thanks.

the top of the crankshaft should have splines on it, if you look close enough, you should see one spline missing. the flywheel should have this similar inside spline, with wider. thats what lines up the flywheel, mate the large gap, with the large spline.

Ok Thanks alot. So once I get it all lined up should the #1 be at the top of the cylinder or is that just lining up the ignition. From here can I just follow Joe's SYnc and timing. Also another question how or where on the motor do you advance or retard the timing.

If I put a dial indicator on it what is top dead center. If you dont have on and just use something in the cylinder is TDC just as it starts back or before it starts back which is best. I really only want to do this once and I appreciate all you help

You do not need a dial indicator to install the flywheel correctly. Simply turn the flywheel until the top piston is as close to the head as you can make it. Use a screwdriver thru the plug hole, to judge how close the piston is to the head, now loosen the eight bolts on the flywheel and rotate the outer flywheel only, until the "TDC" timing decal on the flywheel matched the timing pointer. Remember the flywheel can only be put on eight ways, so you only need to be closer than 360/8 = 45 degrees, to get it right.

Now use a dial indicator or an a caliper to check the accuracy of the timing pointer and you can set the timing accurately.

Can any of you post a pic of the chocking system. It came in pieces and I think I got it right but it will get stuck every now and then. The part of the chock solenoid that goes up and down will hold the chock closed after you release it. I might have the return spring on wrong but have tried many different ways. Also should the choke only be on the top two carbs because if so I am missing one.

Singer,
I have the same motor as you and I asked the same question. I can answer that for you. The chokes are for the top 2 carbs. As far as them sticking: Is the solenoid retracting all the way or is it sticking?

The large stainless steel spring fits on the top carb and opens the choke, whne you release the choke button. As you look at the top carb, from the front, the curly side of the spring should be on the left (I think). The bottom of the spring (hook side) hooks into the stud and nut that sticks out of the side bowl of the carb.

Make sure the manual choke (knob and wire) doesn't cause the choke to stick or bind.
