I've got my winter project boat and a new engine lined up, I was told this boat was in the water running this summer but then again who knows.. I would like to get all the gas out of it just to be sure,, what's the easiest way??? And don't say drill a hole from the bottom..

Broke, Can you remove the tank from the boat? I like to drain the gas, pull the tank and clean out the gunk with soap and water. Then make sure all the water is out of the tank, slosh some denatured alcohol around to get any residual water and dump it out. Now reinstall your nice dry, clean tank and fill it with new gas.

It helps if you remove the gauge sender. This gives a 5" dia hole to work with.

Brokemerc,

If you think you have water (and other debris) in your tank your best bet would be to remove the tank and clean it well.

You probably have access to your gage sender and it's a really good idea to remove the sender so you can look inside the tank to ensure that you have all the debris out.

I removed most all of the debris in my tank by using some 3/4" clear vinyl tubing from Home Depot to "vacuum" it out.

DO NOT USE A VACUUM!!!

Use 15 or 20' of tubing and siphon all the fuel out thru the gage sender hole..... If you have a fair amount of "head pressure" (vertical distance between the fuel level and the receiving tank) you'll have a pretty good vacuum to suck out all the debris. Have a helper ready to put their thumb over the hose and switch to an empty container when the first one fills up.

Filter the gas thru a decent filter and use it in your car or something.

My gage sender hole was near the rear of the tank so I picked the bow up to make the hole the lowest point and started the siphon. I got 25 gallons out of mine + all the "stuff".....It was well worth it!!

Put the fuel gage sender back in when you're ready with a new gasket.

You can also get a good "eyeball" check on the in-tank fuel strainer.

Cheers,

Rick

i've used a hand siphon pump from the auto parts store.....if ya place yer gas can lower than the fuel tank. once it starts to run. siphon action will take over and all ya gotta do is watch for when yer container is full.....

Re: Draining a gas tank?

I have a female connector I connect to my regular fuel line and pump the primer bulb to get the flow started and let it run into 5 gal tanks, slow but effective and you end up with filtered gas. I usually do this when I am about due for a new fuel/water seperator filter and that way you will get any water out of your main tank. I always carry a spare filter on the boat with me just in case I need one.

I got a bottle mop (looks like a miniature mop) from the dollar store and swabbed the tank perodically as I siphoned the gas out. I used the filtered gas in my lawn tractor.

Re: Draining a gas tank?

If you just want to drain out the old gas it takes no work at all. Pull the end off your fuel line pump the ball a couple of times and stick it in a gas tank on the ground. It will siphon itself.

Oops this is assuming you are out of the water on a trailer.
