Hello all -
I broke the drive shaft on my '87 Johnson 60 hp and am lost as to what to do. Repair shop is telling me $1,000 to get it all fixed, and I was hoping to sell the motor this spring for $1500 before all this. Do you think someone would pay $500 for the motor as is knowing the drive shaft needs fixed? Its been a great motor aside from this freak accident, but is just too big for what I'm using it for.

Re: Broken drive shaft

Welcome to iboats mattski.
I haven't done this but replacing the driveshaft shouldn't be a difficult job. You'll have to drop the lower unit and pull the gears out to disconnect the driveshaft from the gear. How much of the G-note is for the driveshaft itself?
How the heck do you break a driveshaft? Seems to me the prop would slip before you damage the engine or gears.

If you get a manual, along with some specialty tools per say, along with this forum, you can get er done for much less, but invest in an original manual, check ebay or outboardbooks.com for a re print

Matt, You might like to look for a replacement lower unit. It may be cheaper than the replacement labor, provided you can find a used driveshaft. New parts and labor will be cost prohibitive.

I think there are a few three cylinder motors on ebay with bad powerheads.
