Hi all,

I recently purchased a boat with the above engine, I purchased it with the engine not working (deceased estate purchase) but managed to get it working with a can of Aerostart.

I have a few questions as to If I can purchase a service/repair manual for it, and if parts are in some way still available, and can it be converted from a points system to a coil pack type system?

I dont know the year of it, but it has "V4AL19?1" stamped into it.
The ? looks like a upright "0" and a sideways "0" stamped ontop of one another.

I thank you all for any help and advice you can provide. :)

Closest to that S/N I can find is 1967

1967 Manuals here:"http://www.outboardbooks.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=models.main&year=1967&ID=55168"

do not use aerostart, use premixed gas/oil 50:1

V4AL19 is indeed a 1967. Most parts are still available. Why on earth do you want to change the ignition system??? Most people with the newer electronic ignition are trying to change them back to points & coil. What you have is about as simple and reliable as it gets. Check your lower unit oil..change it if you don't know the history. Use ONLY OMC/BRP Premium Blend oil in that Electramatic(replaces Type C). You have to get it from a dealer. Clean and proper oil is the key to long life.

I bought a Seloc brand manual for my 77' Johnson and although it helps me get the job done, it is not a helpfull as I would like it to be. Just my $.02.

Hi all!

Thank you so much for your replies.

I have just completed a compression check on all 4 cylinders and they all came back to 98 PSI (650 kPa)

Is this this compression still any good?

Cheers! :)

Compression readings will vary with different gauges and with the speed that the engine is cranking over. The fact that all readings are even is ideal.

Re: Johnson Super Sea Horse 80 (Electromatic) -- Questions about it

Thanks again! :)

I have been cranking it over, but it seems there are a few petrol leaks especially where the fuel connector plugs into the engine, maybe the engine connector has a leaking o-ring?

I also think that maybe the fuel system is dirty or clogged, as I get good crank, I get spark because I used a little Aero start and it popped along for 1 second (I wont use Aerostart anymore!) but I do not get the engine to start up ..

Cheers ....

Hi all,

It seems I got this sleeping beauty running, it just required a little gulp of petrol through the intake, some jiggling of the earth wires and it fired up first go.. oh man it purrs really nice!

It seemed to then suck the petrol easily from the tank after clearing its throat :D

Re: Johnson Super Sea Horse 80 (Electromatic) -- Purchase head gaskets?

Re: Johnson Super Sea Horse 80 (Electromatic) -- Purchase head gaskets?

Hi all! :)

Sorry to be a pain, but I would like to start replacing some severely corroded head bolts with some nice high grade stainless steel ones, does any one know a shop or online shop I can order online with and that will send to Australia the head gaskets and top gasket?

Or do you think it would be possible to remove a single bolt at a time to prevent me needing to get another head gasket?

Many many thanks! ;)

you've got good compression, why take a chance of breaking a bolt off, until you absolutely have to. i'd be more worried about the water pump, that definately need changing.

take a look at this:http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086

You might want to think twice about installing stainless bolts. Stainless is less compatible with aluminum than steel is. That is to say that the stainless bolts will corrode in the holes worse than steel and will be harder to remove in the future. And when you do break one off, it is much harder to drill out. The only advantage, if there is one, is that the heads won't rust.

You will also probably find that the head bolts are special thread length. The hardware store variety may bottom out on the threads before the gasket is tight. Many other bolts have a similar problem, or be a special length. OMC was very fond of using crazy lengths like 5/8" or 7/8".

Re: Johnson Super Sea Horse 80 (Electromatic) -- Head Gasket Question :)

Thank you all very much again, I will not remove the heads nor use stainless steel then, I might simply brush some rust converter on them and apply a liberal smear of grease/vasaline afterwards :)

I will get to replacing some frayed wiring, and a niggling earth issue and hopefully be happily fishing in the not too distant future .. :D
