Engine dies out

Hello Folks!

I have a 1973 6HP Evinrude Fisherman, model# 6302s. My problem is the motor dies out after about 10 seconds after I start it up. It has a fresh 50:1 mix; 2 new Champion CJ8 plugs. It is getting fuel to the filter and the screen is clean. It just sounds like it is starving for fuel...any thoughts?

Thanks,

When it starts to die try pumping the primer bulb. If you can keep it running that way, rebuild the fuel pump. If that doesn't work you may have some trash or gum in your carb and it will need to be rebuilt.

I agree with Bill, the fuel pump should be checked but the most likely suspect would be the carb "gummed up". Just one thought ... did you check the fuel shut off valve to make sure it's open all the way? I know I have made simple mistakes that caused alot of agravition.

If the bulb has a tendency to pull flat, that's obviously a fuel restriction. If priming the primer bulb causes it to "pick up", so to speak, the carb floats could be improperly set or defective, failing fuel pump diaphragm, etc... Also check all fuel lines for leaks and defective fittings. Im assuming the fuel tank is set up correctly?

The old fuel lines may be allowing air to get into the fuel system, starving the motor for fuel. I'd check the hose clamps and hose segments for cracks, or just replace them and start with new fuel lines, if you havn't already. Also the supply line and squeeze bulb from the fuel tank to the motor conection could also leak air, if they are as old as your motor.
