Closing is Thursday for selling my mother's house. That house has been in our family for over 80 years. I have too many memories of the place to begin to share any. It's the house I was brought home to after I was born.
I'm not celebrating the "letting go" of this home. Very sad day for me.:(:(

I agree with Tashasdaddy. I left the home I lived in my whole life when I went into the Army in 1977. I still go and sit on the corner and remember.

I know exactly the feeling. When Mom passed a few years ago, we agonized over the probable sale of the home (59 years in the family) that my sister bought out my share and kept it.

I know it can be hard to let go of a place that means so much. Did you take a piece of it? Maybe the door knocker off the front door, or door bell, or some other piece of hardware that will always remind you of the house when you see it sitting on your book shelf.

Don't forget to photograph the entire place, inside and out. Its nice to be able to show the grand kids where you grew up, and they will appreciate the documentation as they get older and start asking questions about where you lived when you were a kid.

I will get to know that feeling soon enough.Mom and dad have their house down here up for sale.Just a matter of time before someone else buys it.Gonna be real weird to drive by and see someone else living there after 35 years of it being home.In a week or two they are coming down to get the rest of their furniture and etc out and moved up north to their new home.Going to seem pretty final then.:(

Re: Sold the old homestead

This thread hits home with me. I just sold my Dads home several months ago. He built it in 1947 after coming home from the war. Raised 4 children. You have to know that times change and the time for it being a "home" has stoped. Our old homeplace sadly to say but true became nothing more than a piece of real estate the moment my dad passed away. Accept it as it being the right time now to move on and enjoy the wonderful memories.....and by the way even though everyone has bills to pay make sure you buy yourself something sorta extra to enjoy from the proceeds if posible..Me Im going to buy a nice used outboard and bills can take the rest.:D

Re: Sold the old homestead

We moved around alot when I was little. At 13 my folks bought a new double wide and put it on the lot besides my grandmothers house. Granny died about 9 years ago. My folks sold their house and moved away from there about 2 years ago. I absolutely miss nothing about the place.
We built us a new house and have been in it for about 4 months now. I had lived in my previous house for 14 years. I have yet to finsish getting all of my stuff out of it or freshin it up. That place was my HOME. I went bu today to grab my extra chainsaw. I sat in the floor and just got more and more depressed. Kinda weird how life makes ya feel huh?

Sorry to hear that. I agree with treedancer and take some pictures or up dated pictures of it.
My Grandfather on my father's side had a farm and all on the land we live on now, he had a total of 150 acers or so and he split it up between 12 of my grandfather's kids, then some of the land was divided up between me and my cousins. Not all relatives live up here even though they may have land up here.

Sorry to hear that Tyme2fish. I agree with treedancer and take some pictures or up dated pictures of it. I wished I had a picture of the homestead up in New York, we had a view for miles, lived on the side of a mountain very nice spot of land. I have dreamed of what that looks like up there now a days. I would love to see it again, and even though I was just a kid when we moved from there it still upsets me to remember what I still consider home and that home is buried in and always will be in my heart.

Not all relatives live up here even though they may have land up here, somewhat sad. There is a road named after our last name, we have a family grave yard out back.

P.S. SORRY ABOUT THE DOUBLE POST, I think I just Double posted now, anyhow I just meant to edit, darn internet service got me messed up. Yep I double posted some how good grief.

Re: Sold the old homestead

I have a few pictures but the house is in Virginia and I live in Indiana. Nice idea to take pictures throughout.

I'm the type of person that holds on to the past. Keep my old friends if I can, have had a yearly party for 28 years to keep from losing track of people. If it wasn't for our party, most of these friends would never see the other friends that don't live close.
Anyway, still a sad day for me. Thanks for the all the good thoughts.

The second part of your post speaks volumes. I've never lived in one place for more than 10 years. Nor have my parents. So Dwellings don't mean much to me, well not in an emotional way any how. Now friends and family theres another story. IMO thats what really matters in life.
