I recently purchased a 16ft jon boat side console with a 1989 30HP johnson 2 stroke on it. The motor will start up, idle most the time, run fine until about a little past 1/2 throttle. at about 3/4 it will surge power every 5 seconds. at full throttle it runs fine for 10-15 seconds then dies. the motor will then not even turn over. when i turn the key nothing. wait ten minutes starts up fine.

The not cranking after it stalls worries me.It could be an overheat.
Very bad for motor.Does it pump water?May also have a fuel supply problem.
Does it run better if you squeeze the primer bulb as it runs?Or does it respond if you try a little choke?

the water is pumping very good. it will cruise around the water at half throttle with no problem for as long as i want it just happens above that. It shuts off no matter how warm or cold the engine is at high throttle. The choke is the primer and it doesnt really do anything at high rpm to help the situation. the fuel filter does not look clogged i thought it could be the main jet clogged or a fuel pump but the fact that it doesnt turn over for ten minutes makes me unsure. the fuel bulb stays pretty firm. after it shuts off the solenoid does not click. the primer won't even work

Should be a primer bulb in the fuel line if squeezing it helps it would indicate
a fuel pump or other fuel supply problem. The cranking problem could be the neutral safety switch.

When it dies can you turn the flywheel by hand?
