New model from Mercruiser... Looks like a 470 re-incarnated

Just looked at the Merc website and see Mercruiser have introduced a new model... Vazer... It's a 1.6 litre, 100hp 'low-profile' unit... BUT, it's iron block, alloy head, with a cooler... Sound familiar? The old wrenches here will be thinking 470 all over again!!

Nah, cast iron blocks with alloy heads have been common in cars for years. For the most part they are not really an issue. Get used to this, cause this is where all marine power is gonna have to go, if GM keeps being the main supplier. They are eventually gonna have to use the 6.0 widely and maybe the 5.3, and those come standard with iron block/alloy head.
I think the odd-ball Iron head/alloy block of the 470 is something that won't ever get duplicated anywhere, ever again.

Vazer is based on the proven GM Vortec 1600 4-cylinder single overhead cam engine mated to an all-new compact sterndrive

nothing like the 470, more like the old Volvo 4 banger

Pretty cool. Lot's of features. The one that struck me was NO owner maintenance (draining water) for winterization.

A little heavy at 560# for 100 HP but it would be perfect for small runabouts and toons.

the 470 was iron head/alum block so this is opposite

any bets on when the first person wanders in here asking how they can easily get another 25HP out of it?

it'll go like:

My new Bayliner bowrider only goes 26mph. How do i make it go 50? is there a turbo? If I put a K&N cold air kit on it will that make it the fastest boat on the lake? How do I mount a fart pipe to the exhaust?

That would be Australian Western Summer Time. We don't go back to proper time until March.

Some wally thought it would be a good idea for us to fiddle with a perfectly good time system. We're stuck with it until July next year when we vote on whether to keep it up. I have 26 f...ing clocks to adjust in my house/car/boat!!! Worst idea ever!!!
