Removing the leg is no big deal, it's a 6 minute job. It also gives you the opportunity to check all sorts of things. The gimbal bearing, the uni-joints, the engine alignment, the preload on the drive gear bearings in the top of the leg. Any of which could be causing your noise.
To remove the leg:
1. Shift to forward gear...

2. Remove aft anchor points on trim rams. You haven't given us a serial number so we don't know which particular model you have.
3. Remove 6 of nuts holding the leg to the bellhousing.
4. Support leg and pull straight back.
5. Pick up leg off the ground. Sorry, forgot to tell you it was heavy.
Once you've done all that get back here and we can tell you how to check all the different things. And how to avoid the traps about putting the leg back on.
