I lost one of my dogs a couple weeks ago due to a bad health problem. It hit him overnight and the vet said it was best to put him down because he was having organs shutting down. That was hard.
Anyway,My Boxer is now sad and pouts all day because he misses the other dog.
I have been talking with a couple local rescue groups and GEEZE! what a pain they are. They want to do a home inspection, asked my yearly income and want personal references. As well as my drivers license number and social security number.
I understand they want a good home but this is like adopting a child.
They also do not like the fact i have an invisible fence system instead of a regular fence.
I don't understand why they complain about putting over 5000 dogs to death in this county every year but are so strict on adoption.I don't have a problem with them checking my home out but some of the info they ask is to personal to give out.

Re: Dog adoption

It is the same here you have to give a lot of info and they will make at least one visit

But it is also pretty common for them to have to take 37 dogs or 87 cats out of some really bad places ,it is very common up here for well meaning people to take into many pets and let it get out of control

Look in the paper.....
Plenty of free pups....
The older dog will more likely take to a pup as opposed to a grown dog.....;)

Re: Dog adoption

I think i found a rescue dog and the place was fine with the fence and other dog at home. She is a 1 year old Boxer,I go meet her with my dog tomorrow.
She is already house broke, crate trained and leash trained. She gets along well with her other foster dogs. The fee is 125 bucks and that includes her being spayed, all shots and micro chip. Also they give a voucher for her next vet check up.Pretty good deal and it saves an animal from the pound.:D No potty training!!!Thats a good perk!

Re: Dog adoption

Sorry to hear about your dog.. Its probably the hardest thing an owner has to do..

As for the rescue agencies.. Well.. Personally I respect their interests, but that is what humane society's and SPCA's are for. Somehow their heads seem to have grown 3 times their size.

Anyone who wants that much personal information can bite me.

Re: Dog adoption

Yea TD that is a good point.I guess they have their reasons for being so strict.Just asking my SS number kind of ticked me off.
The place that has this female did not ask for it.They were really nice.
If i like her when i meet her in the morning they will have her spayed and it will be a couple weeks before i bring her home.I hope my dog likes her.He is usually real easy going with other dogs.
Only one dog that runs the neighborhood he does not like,a huge german shepard. It stole his toy one day and ever since he kicks its butt if it comes in the yard.He is a big softy usually, but at 85 pounds he can handle himself.

Re: Dog adoption

it would be a good idea to let him meet her first. then when you bring her home, let them meet on neutral ground, and bring the home together. that way he is kinda inviting her in, instead of her intruding.

Jeeze.. TD.. I didnt even think of the dogfighting thing.. Well that would make sense why they would want to know so much..

Re: Dog adoption

Thats the plan,They said i could bring my dog in the morning so they can meet.So if that goes well we will do the adoption process.Meeting on common ground is a good idea.

Re: Dog adoption

Sorry to hear about your loss.......:(

Rescue is the way to go! :) I agree that the "adoption" centers are a tad bit over the top on the information they request. I would then in turn ask to see the privacy act statements they should be keeping and the background investigations on all the people who have access to the info..... it usually shuts down quite a few of the personal questions.

Re: Dog adoption

Thanks Bob. Yea i thought about asking them that. They did not get that info from me.I'm glad i'm dealing with this other rescue place. All they needed was a reference from my Vet.My Vet called me to make sure it was ok to release the info. The rescue called back i little while ago to tell me i was approved with no problem. So far they have been really nice to deal with.People like that i will feel good making some donations to.

Re: Dog adoption

Congrats on the rescue Gary, we just rescued this little fella a couple of months ago:
rileys1stride05.jpg

As you can see he took to boating pretty well. We took our Golden Retriever in to meet him prior to him coming home as well; all was good and they play constantly. It has been good for our 7 yr old Golden, he's lost 9 pounds and the new guy has gained 11 (he's a growing pup still).

A few years back I tried to adopt a dog from an agency while I was still living in TN, we were given a questionairre which apparently we failed. According to the "adoption agent" we were denied because we did not intend to crate train the dog; at the time I lived on a 100+ acre farm where my other dog enjoyed spending his free time outside when we weren't home. There was a doggie door, and always plenty of fresh water, he could go inside any time he pleased, but there was a creek to play in, squirrels to chase, woods to run through, etc, so indoors held little charm while we weren't home; this was how we planned to keep any new dogs who came to stay. The agency we interviewed with to rescue a pooch thought this was inhumane so we went to the pound, turned out the guy we ended up with was a good match and he didn't seem to mind having free reign of the farm.

Good luck with the new addition!!!!

Re: Dog adoption

Thanks TD.They are not supposed to be in the bed but how do you disturb them when they look like that? I guess i'm getting softer the older i get..
The boy is 85 pounds and the girl is 43.She will be one year old next month so she will fill out more.I'm glad i got her.I was hesitant at first but after watching her the last couple days she has really started to warm up to us.Sometimes i wish they could tell us what they have been through.I know she started her life on the other end of the state and was brought to the pound because they could not afford to feed her.She was only 20 pounds when the rescue place got her from the kill shelter.I'm going to help the rescue place out with some donations. It is a total not profit all volunteer group.Nice folks. If i can give them a few bucks every so often it may help save some other animals.
see,i am getting soft...lol:p

Re: Dog adoption

Two cats here - I'd love to have a dog or two but just don't lead a life that would be best for them. Both of the cats came from the local pound close to 15 years ago. Fortunately, New Orleans is not big on "political correctness" so adopting them was very easy.

While I can appreciate a desire on the part of rescue centers to make sure that they place animals in suitable homes, I agree that the amount of information that they want is ridiculous. My cats are spoiled rotten and have their own house - which is my workshop. It doesn't get cold much where I live but when it does, they live in heated quarters. I usually don't A/C it in the summer just for them (it does have A/C) because, since they are only inside at night, a fan is sufficient. Since I actually live about 20 minutes outside of New Orleans, adjacent to a rural area, they have plenty of woods to roam in - my "backyard" is owned by a large land company and is several thousand acres of wooded, undeveloped land. So, I guess that while I may not have met the standards that some of these folks want, my animals have lived pretty well.

In my area they would not let you adopt black cats close to Halloween.
