Re: trim pump question

Just a quick follow up...
I got the ram rebuilt - operates smoothly now. Thought that MUST have fixed the problem. No luck. Pump must be shot. May end up replacing entire system with something newer.

Re: trim pump question

Why not just unstick the stuck ball in the relief. There's also another check valve on the pump suction that can stick open. I'd just take the pump apart and clean everything out.
Swapping in another system requires hydraulic engineering knowledge, or luck. The rams on your boat are designed to work with that style pump. The relief valves are set accordingly.
Use a differnt pump and you could bend or break something, or blow a hose, or maybe blow a fuse on the electrical side, or you could have a lack of hydraulic power.
I've been having a great time reading the trim/tilt info a buddy at work gave me from mercruiser service training. It's a 2003 book but goes back to the 80's.
there's way more different trim/tilt systems than there ought to be. 4 different pump suppliers in that book alone. They're all similar, but have different relief settings and some have shuttle valves with pilot checks and some don't. Some have shock absorbing cylinders, some don't

Yeah it tells ya how to bleed the system too. Might be air locked if you had the system apart it needs to be bled. I might go through the same thing when i put mine back together. I'd crack the line going into the reverse valve if it sprays go to the other side of it coming out and check it. Process of elimination following the diagram.
