Re: Help with 30 hp evinrude

welcome to iboats. 99% you have a bad clutch dog. is it tiller or remote controlled. the gears in the lower unit are very square edged, from shifting slowly ( hearing the gears mesh) these edges get worn, and rounded off. thus, when the load is applied the come out of gear. almost like hitting a log.

if it is remote controlled the cables could be misadjusted, and not going all the way in gear. or the shift linkage could be misadjusted.

New gear set $500-600. Used lower unit $300-400, but you may be able to get a used lower unit cheaper. If its in good shape I'd bite and take it off his hands depending on the year. I don't believe they made a 30 hp until the 1980's with the exception of 1956, but I doubt you'd mistake a 1950's for a 1980's outboard. A good 1980's OMC 30 hp tiller would fetch around $1000 CDN up here.

I'd find a donor motor with a bad powerhead and a good lower unit. I paid $275 for my last one and it had electric start.

"Easy" depends on your skills and comfort level with tearing a lower unit completely apart. Start off with a factory service manual from outboardbooks.com

Parts ain't cheap.

You will probably need to add the cost of a couple extra tools you may not already have in your tool chest, such as a big honking pair of snap ring pliers.
