In lieu of installing a backup battery, what else can I purchase to use as a backup power source in case the battery dies? I want something reliable, that works. Suggestions? Thanks.

Re: Battery Backup Ideas?

I have used one of them jump start boxes before.
Keep them charged up and they are good to go.
I have also seen the guy at the marina use one also several times.

Re: Battery Backup Ideas?

The only source of backup power on a boat is a generator or another battery. Since another battery is the only "space saving" way to carry extra power, you have two choices: A separate battery and battery switch or jumper cables, or a jump start box. If you have a very large motor (such as an V8 inboard or I/O or a large outboard, a separate large capacity battery might be a better choice. Jump start boxes don't have a lot of cranking capacity. Since many starting problems are not battery related but rather due to mechanical or ignition issues that requires lots of cranking, fixing the issue is more important than worrying about extra power. But never-the-less, a jump start box is better than nothing.

"something reliable, that works" - well heck, if you're going to put all kinds of restrictions on it ;) I have this rope, with a wooden handle on the end..............

JT -- your rope start works well. Unfortunately, on a 350 V8 there isn't a place to wrap the rope and my buddy "Bubba" may not be along to give it a yank.

ok, here's an idea for an invention...a crank handle that fits the propshaft splines...I'll leave it up to you to design the clutch mechanism that'll keep it from breaking bubba's arm when the motor starts...

[sure, SBN's idea is reliable, and works, but is carrying around a portable back-up battery really "in lieu of installing" one?]

I keep one in my truck plugged up all the time.
Never know when you will need it and I would much rather use it than jump from my truck and take a chance of hurting something.
Plus they are better than them tangled up jumper cables.

I keep a jumpstart box plugged in on the big boat; not for me but for jumpstarting other boats out on the water.
I usually throw it in the Jon boat when we're running around- just in case.
BTW- It was strong enough to start a Ford diesel pickup last summer.....

I do the same as ARKS. I have a dual bat setup on my barge but I also take along a jump start box just in case. That is, just in case I come up on somebody that needs a jump. I just hand it to them and say go for it. I don't use my boat for jump starts. Had to use it (jump start box) twice for that reason last season. One was an outboard (115hp) and the other was a jet boat with a 455ci olds. It will turn over a V8. Couldn't beat the price for piece of mind. $39.95/Harbor Freight.

what about a solar powered battery charger? i am thinking of getting one for the same reason I dont want my battery totally dead at the end of the day because my radio was on but i'm not sure if you can leave it hooked up while the motor is running that inconvenience would be the only downside.

Re: Battery Backup Ideas?

bigdawggie,

Solar is only good for recharging, (at a slow rate, for the most part)!
It doesn't work well when you need the umphed or amp's to start something.
You need something that has already stored the needed energy for the requirement.

To put it a different way....
It takes years to enrich (depending on the country), to get enough of the umphe to make a nuclear bomb (iran). To get the desired effect.

Solar, slow charge, replenishes the umphed (batteries).

By the way, I just installed a 2.3KW solar on the house.

Bubba could blow down the carb to turn it over:D

This is one of the best battery boosters I have used. I haven't used this one yet but my brother has one just like it and it has saved our behinds a few times while out on the lake. It even has an inverter, light, and an air compressor, so if your out tubing and realize that your tube is low on air, just brake the air compressor out and pump it up.

I would love to see that SgtMaj.
Almost the same room for, "A second battery". And or portable?
You weren't in the Marine Corps were you?
