I don't know about weight formula, maybe if you were useing a mushroom type anchor, but those danforth anchors have great holding ability from what I've heard, I just don't like the dangerous looks of them sword like (digger thingys) flukes I guess their called, I guess it could come in handy as a weapon if the need ever arose. Myself I have a 10or15lb Navy style anchor for my 20' it's smooth and easy to handle and put away, only boat on inland lakes and erie once in a while and it's always been good up to 1-3 footers, I don't go out if it's bad weather.

Stars, If you look in the discount amrine store catalogs (West, BoatUS etc) there is usually a recommended weight for the fluke type anchors. You might go up one size if you are unsure, or it they do not have one that fits your boat exactly.

I have a 21footer that I use off Jersey. I do not remember the size of the anchor however. If I remember, it is something like a 8 pounder for a 16 footer, 10 pounder for an 18 footer, 12 pounder for a 21 footer....

I use a 2.5 pounder on my 16 foot speedboat, but I am never in heavy seas!

Re: Anchor ?

if its a real danforth. ya can got here..
the fortress web site also has the proper recomended anchor by size of boat for it's anchor.....
if it's a danforth look alike. guess ya'll have to make a best guess..... all anchors are not created equal.

don't know if ya got the book sns. but chapman piloting seamanship and handling is a real good book to get.... maybe check it out a the liabray.... it's a wealth of knowledge.... has a whole section devoted to anchoring......

Re: Anchor ?

May want to consider a second anchor of a different style as well. As mentioned, Chapmans Piloting has a good section on anchoring. Check you charts for where you plan to do most of your boating, see the type of bottom. My Danforth clone had a hell of time digging through the weeds last summer, perhaps a plow style would have worked better in this situation.

Also don't go with the lighter choice, condtions can change in an instant, you may be depending on the extra holding power some day. Finally, go with extra chain. I usually go with a foot per foot with the boat. Will hold the rode more horizontal and act as a shock absorber, plus there are lots of crusty ocean critters that will wear you line away. Oh yeah... don't forget to have the other end of the line tied to the boat....it happens.
