I believe something along this line would work for a motor support/stand. Any kind of work horse should work, well preferably one that has the bracing on the side and not in the middle (I believe that is what you call them). Don't forget to use a set of muffs to run that motor. As for the your post in non boating technical forum, Thanks you, I appreciate it and I'm glad to be back :).

Re: building an engine test stand

A stand for storage and a stand for testing have different needs, Fairlaneman.

I would never try to run an engine on one of my (pretty flimsy) storage stands.

I have in the past, however, put engine mounts on a 55gal drum and run small outboards in that. Probably wouldn't do for anything over about 10hp.

A metal stock watering tank would do well for bigger engines. Fabricate a "transom" and bolt it securely to the side (end, if an oval tank). That should allow you to test your engine under load, depending on how big the tank is..

thanks .the pictures help alot. I want to put the foot in water to do the testing. What about a heavy wooden stand with a large trash can full of water secured in place?

That sounds good enough to me. I know of a few people that have used a decent size trash can for running the motor in. Although you will half to fight the motor when moving the trash can in place then lower the lower unit down in it, it would be a heck of a combination to do by yourself.

I don't know how your 40HP is setup, but I personally would run it on muffs, this would also help flush it out if it hasn't been ran in a while. You can get them here on iboats or I'm sure you can find the local at wallyworld (I believe), they are cheap.

to run the motor the stand has to be substancial, yes a big trash can will work, keep the hose running, as the motor is going to throw water out of the can. watch for overhead. leg on the LarkIII has to be submerge atleast 1/2 up the leg for it to cool. the water pump is not self priming.

I wonder what you guys do for keeping a lower unit upright while servicing the water pump.......I'm coming up on the first water pump impeller replacement since I've owned the boat and have been thinking about some sort of stand to keep it secure....any ideas? (200hpdi Yamaha).

i remove the prop, and cut a slot in a piece of plywood, on saw horses. slide the lower into the slot. the AV plate keeps it level.

TonyNoriega,

Here is what I use. Its a piece of 2 x 6 with a slot about 10" deep and 2" wide clamped to my work bench. You may have to use a 2 x 8 with slightly larger demensions. I've used it on motors up to 35 hp.

Re: building an engine test stand

I remember we had no garage, so in the spring, & fall, when I was about 15-16yrs old carrying the powerhead of Dad's 1962 Evinrude manual start 40hp big twin (while dad held the skeg), out of the basement, up the stairs, thru the hall, out the door, and into a 55gallon drum, with a 2"X6" across the front for support (140lbs dead weight!) for it's spring, or winter servicing, and it wasn't much of an issue back then, nowadays, I'd never be able to do it

Here's one I built about seven years ago. I still use it.

It is 100% 2" X 4" construction. It is wide enough to fit a 55 gallon (cut down) plastic barrel inside to run the engine. I have run that 90 HP, on this stand.

It also sits on casters to make moving it around easier.

PLEASE do not answer old threads and bring them up from the archives. Most people use them for reference
