Guys,
i would like to setup a temp guage for my 71 60HP johnson. I currently do not have any indication if the motor is running fine so I think this might be a good way of preventing any issues in the future. Does anybody know what I need to do this? I am guessing a guage and some type of sending unit from the motor? Or is there a better way? Any help would be great.
Thanks,
James

your on the right track, there is a sensor that goes on a head bolt, then you need the guage. the problem is by the time the guage read hot, damage can already be done. a water pressure sensor, is a better detector. you would have to install a tale tell, for a pressure guage. the pressure guages tell you, you have water pumping. no water, no cooling.

That's a great idea, TD! I have been thingking about adding a pee tube to my '72 Johnson 65hp and I think I will put a pressure sensor and guage in if I do!

Although a water pressure gauge tells you the water pump is working, it is no guarantee the engine is not overheating. Stuck thermostats, blown head gaskets, lean conditions can all cause overheating yet the water pressure remains perfectly normal. In my view a temp gauge is equally important and outboards should have both. Both gauges are available here on iBoats. If you want a temp gauge, make sure you get one for an outboard. A gauge that reads 120 - 260 is useless on an outboard as the gauge would never move during normal operation. They are normally calibrated starting at 60 degrees on the low end. Make sure you get a sender to match. There is no sender for a water pressure gauge. Just tap into the water jacket and connect the tube. There are instructions on this forum how to do that. Just search for "Tell Tale Addition" or similar words.

I have also wanted to add a pressure gauge to a 150hp 2003 johnson. The nice part is they put a plug in the head for one. Even tells you thats what it's for. Did they do this on any other motors?:D
