Reed Box Problem

1990 Evinrude 200 HP Model: VE200SLESE

After taking the boat out last week I noticed some severe spitting in the lower left carb port. I removed the intake manifold and sure enough found both of the lower reed box screws missing.

I further noticed that the gasket on the reed box directly above the one with the screws out is starting to work its way out

This is all I have left of the gasket on the reed box with the screws missing:

Any ideas on why these gaskets are failing?
Did the gaskets fail and the screws loosen or vice-versa?
My service manual says to put the new gaskets in dry (I bought them here).
What do you think happend to the rest of the gasket pieces?
Lastly, there appears to be a rubber coating on my reed boxes - is this normal or custom? I checked these with a flashlight and there is definately light comming through the edges of the reeds. Does that indicate that the reeds need to be replaced? The picture is not very good...

If I need to replace the reeds, will the Boyesen Reeds work with my Rubber Coated Boxes?

What you're seeing isn't unusual at all. It's not so common that most motors do it but it has been known to happen. Most likely the screws worked their way loose first then the gasket came out of place. Surface the gasket area and use the new gasket. Personally I use the OMC / BRP Gasket Sealer on them.

The Boyesens will indeed work fine. Surface the reed box just the same as if it were not coated. If you go thru the rubber in places, don't worry about it.
