Just mounted one of these on my boat. Near factory compression. It starts great and idles fantastic. I took it out on the maiden voyage and it will only kick up to 2500 RPM. Its not lugging and not missing. Good spark. Its plenty of engine for my boat and I think its propped right. It doesn't get up to the speed my 75 did. Mechanic thinks it might be carbs. Any other things I should check?

Be sure that the throttle cables permit the carb butterflys to open fully. Could just be an initial setup adjustment. Also make sure the link arm to the timer base is connected and advancing the timing with the throttle. Make sure you have spark to all 6 cylinders. On a V6, it is not readily apparent when one cylinder is not firing. Put a timing light on each plugwire next time you have it on plane to see if each is sparking properly. Ignition systems tend to run fine when cold, then break down when they get hot. You could pull some of the high speed jets and look for debris. If these jets are not prisine clean, you should consider rebuilding the carbs.
