I am i the process of hard wiring my 20 hp johnson 1972 model, but I have a few questions. My male/female connection point was corroded, so I thought I would hard wire everything. I noticed once I had everything apart that there is 5 small wires coming out the female side, but only 4 small wires coming out the male side of the connection point. The extra wire is a green wire that comes from the elec. choke/key switch. I know the two small black wires go up to the points/magneto assembly, the red wire goes to the choke sloenoid, and the white wire goes to the starter solenoid, but I dont know what to do with the green wire. Also does it matter if I get the two black wires that go up into the flywheel assembly flip flopped in the process?

Do you have a service manual? If not I would highly suggest it. There will be wiring diagrams in there that would tell you anything you need to know.

The green wire was connected to the red battery cable. You will probably have to extend it to the battery side of the starter solenoid. It supplies +12V to the key/choke switch.

The black wires are interchangeable.

Yes I have the manual, but I did not happen to have it at the shop with me, it was at home. I had a computer at my disposal so I knew you guys could help me. Thanks!

Re: 1972 johnson 20hp wiring help

I was just looking at my manual and noticed some things. My motor is a 72' but it has some of the same wiring as the 73-76 models. Mine has the 72' key swith/choke assembly, but it has the male/female connections like the 73'-76'. According to the manual mine should also have a green wire that goes all the way to the battery+ terminal of the starter solenoid, but instead the green wire on mine meets up with the red battery cable inside the female end of the connection point. Also the diagram for the 72' does not show a neutral safety switch, but mine in fact does have one. Does the fact that my motor is an anniversary edition have anything to do with this, or would it just have been later in the year and possibly they started incorporating some of the 73' concepts into a few 72' models? I just thought it was interesting.
