I need to get the boat off the trailer and onto blocks. I am not sure exactly how to get the boat propped up onto the blocks in the yard. Can anyone help with step by step directions on how to do this?

Re: Boat off the trailer?

What kind of boat are you talking about?

The easiest way to do it is lower the front of the trailer onto the ground so the stern of the boat is up in the air. Then place blocks underneath the rear of the boat and raise the front of the trailer up so it puts the load on the blocks and off the rear of the trailer. Then you just need to work your way forward and get the rest of the boat off the trailer in a similar method. You use wood, foam cubes like boatyards or the actual boat jacks although those can be expensive. Be careful though, this is dangerous!! If your boat is small enough and the engine and other heavy stuff has been removed you could rent two engine hoists and use one on either end to get it off the trailer.

Are you doing this so you can work on the trailer?

Yes I need to do a few things. One I need to take the trailer to be weighed so I can register it, I need to do work on the trailer and also I have another boat to put on it instead of the boat that was on the trailer to begin with.

I suppose the best way to do this, is jack the boat up at both corners in the back, one at a time using a hydraulic jack, with some wood as a cushion between, then set it on a couple house blocks (cement blocks) on each side, with a block of wood on top, then carefully jack up the keel while still on the trailer, and begin to roll your trailer out, till you get to where the jack is then drop the boat back on the trailer till you can reposition your jack in the middle, then continue doing this till your trailers out, then chock up your keel, with house blocks, & a block of wood and remove the jack, thats it.

Getting Boat Off Trailer

you don't need stands.

1/you can lower the tongue to the ground. i would get some 6x6 or old railroad crossties cut the +- 12 inches, now block up the transom. 2/

Raise the tongue of the trailer the back of trailer will drop away from trailer. this is the tricky part. between the cross braces of the trailer block the keel lower trailer, boat will be suspended on the blocks.

3/ pull forward, lift bow again, and reblock i a different place. repeat until trailer is out from under the boat.

4/ to reload, just reverse the procedure.

if you were just working on the bunks, or painting the bottom. you could just do the first 2 steps.

Re: Boat off the trailer?

When I set the blocks for the stern I put them at 45 Degree angle to the keel
And the piles perpendicular to one another. It makes them more stable.
When carrying something in the car or truck that might fall over in a quick stop or hard turn I do the same thing.45 degree angle to direction of travel and tucked in a front corner if possible.Of course I also try to secure it.

Re: Boat off the trailer?

When I need to work on my trailer I asked the local marina to let me launch the boat and then pick it up with their fork truck and store it on stands. Charged me a pull fee and pro rated the storage for a two week period. Worked out well. I have also lauched the boat and let the family and inlaws enjoy the boat while i set at the ramp and worked on the trailer. :D

Re: Boat off the trailer?

I have never done this but was also contemplating it to do some trailer work. What I don't understand about the process described is that all of my boats rest on the trailer AHEAD of the rear most cross member. Therefore, you can't block up the rear and then move the trailer forward as the rear most cross member is in the way. I've never owned a boat that stuck off the back end of the trailer like that. The one I'm thinking of working on also has the boat resting inside of the wheels on bunks (17ft bass boat w/135hp OB). The boat is heavy enough that winching it back on is not an easy task so it would be important to take that into acount as well. Given those obstacles, how would you get the boat off the trailer?

Re: Boat off the trailer?

you block the stern with the bow all the way to the ground, which raises the tramsom. block transom. then raise the bow, block bow, then lower trailer tongue, boat is in the air. now you move trailer forward as much as you can, now reblock the front portion of the keel on the other side of the cross member. and repeat until the trailer is out.

OK, I understand. It would take 2-3 iterations of blocking and moving to clear all of the cross members as the trailer moves forward. Thanks for helping me to understand.
