Difference in Sierra and Mallory Carb Kits

I just bought 60's Evinrude from a friend. It was running sluggish last year with the occasional pick up in performance then sluggish again. He had to use a shot of starter fluid to get it going on the first start but would then start OK the rest of the day. The last time he used it, on the first start he sprayed the starter fluid and when he pulled the rope, it blew fire out the intake and burnt his leg hair. That scared him and he quit using it. I bought it from him for a only $100. He then told me that when he got it, it came with metal cans that had rust in them. He bought a new plastic tank before he ran it.

I am assuming that the sluggishness and changes in performance are because of the rust that could have gotten in the carbs from the old cans and previous owner.

I am looking at rebuilding the carbs. What is the difference in the Sierra and Mallory Carb Kits? Quality?

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

they are both good
Mallory is new to boat parts but been selling auto parts for years

Sierra is good most of the time..........if the application is right and all the parts you need are included.

It's best to look at the pictures of either one to make sure you're getting the right part

nothing beats OEM

And btw, using quick start is a no-no as it provides no lubrication. Use a 50:1 pre mix and spray it in. Or spray some oil in first (although that's not the best method it is better than none)

Use OEM when you can. GET RID of that go juice (starting fluid). That stuff is DEATH to outboards.

Find out what''s really wrong with it and fix it.

I have NEVER found an aftermarket carb kit that everything worked in. There is always something wrong, doesn't fit right, missing, you name it. There is always something.

Don is right.

Everytime I found myself scratching my head over an OEM kit is because I DIDN'T FOLLOW THE MANUAL.

The aftermarket stuff gives you more than enough opportunities to say-Hmmm, huh, why, Hmmmm.

Looks like an OEM kit is the way to go. I just hope my friend didn't over-do-it with the starting fluid and fry the cylinders.

Thanks
Matt
