Boat project

I am looking into buying a 1987 23 ft walk around with inboard /outboard. The boat looks solid but it needs an engine. The thing is, the valve cover is rusted through ( holes in it). The seller told me he trashed the exhaust manifolds and risers because they were rusted badly. Is this much rust normal or is it an indication that the boat was submerged?
Thanks for your help folks.

Re: Boat project

it is obviously, not maintained. 1st what brand boat, and what drive system does it have. if OMC drive train. the outdrive cutout will not fit the other drive systems. and OMC system is not longer supported with parts. get a rubber mallot and tap for rotted spots.

Re: Boat project

The boat is an Imperial 230. It has the Volvo outdrive and the seller tells me it's been setting on the trailer under a tarp for the last 10 years but kept in a dry storage rack the first 10 years. He says it got all of it's use the first half of it's life.
Thanks

Re: Boat project

check in to the cost of a new power train motor and outdrive, sitting that long. very possibly the outdrive is froze up. i think you can buy a good running boat for the cost of repowering. then add the restoration of the hull. can buy a nice boat.
