1990 70hp Johnson lower unit bolts?

I recently bought this boat and everything seemed fine. After getting it back to the house and really looking her over I noticed that there are supposed to be 4 bolts that connect the lower half to the motor shaft. Well there are only 2 in it. The 2 foward ones. The 2 aft ones are not in it. Could this be trouble? I have know idea what size bolts need to go in it an the guy at West Marine seemed lost when I asked. Can you guys help? Thanks

It could be if the two rearward bolts are sheared off.

I believe the bolts are 1/2" Use stainless only. They are not very long. 1-1/2" maybe.

The best thing to do is take out one of the forward bolts to use as a guide.. The lower unit will not drop. There is another bolt that points up under the trim tab (fin above prop).

Thanks, no they are not sheared off the holes do not have anything in them I just hope the threads are not stripped. Do you know if the bolts are fine or course thread, and is it good practice to use Loc Tite when replacing these bolts?

Thanks alot man, you hepled me out big time! Is it common for these hole to get stripped, if so can I helicoil or re tapp them. Not sure if they are just asking. We will see how it goes tomorrow. Again thanks.

It is not common for them to strip out. But it is not unusual for them to break off when removing them if the boat was used in saltwater.....

if it was used in salt water make sure you use a decent marine grade grease and apply it to the bolts. It will help tremenously if and when you have to drop the l/u again.
