Storing herring

The herring are in and other than throwing them in salted ice water before freezing is there a better way to store them for later use as bait? Maybe add some borax?

I just chunk and vacuum pack in sizes big enough for a days fishing

Flash freezing works fine for me.Flash freeze them at -30 until they are quite hard,then vacuum pack them in packages of 3 or 4. That way you only defrost what you need.
I always have a chunk of dry ice in a special cooler where I keep the spare packages so they only defrost as needed.

We uses to put the herring in a bucket and load them with salt and but a lid on the bucket the fish don't smell the best but the fish love it. We had much better luck with salted herrring than we did with fresh belive it or not.

I froze the first batch and since they are still in the harbor (not the ones I froze) I will try salting a 5 gal. bucket full. Next year when they come in to spawn I'll know which way to go.
