Merc 225 EFI Offshore - Oil thru Exhaust

Hi,
I have a pair of Mercury 225 EFI Offshore engines. They are 1998's I believe. My boat is in the water in M.A. and I went down to it yesterday to check the bilge/etc after we recently got a ton of rain.

I ran the engines, as it was a nice day, and wanted to warm them up/etc.

After about 10 minutes, the starboard engine started to release a fair amount of oil from the enhaust port. The oil was black-ish, and I couldn't tell if it was my 2-stroke oil, which is blue. I bumped up the throttle and a large quantity of oil came flushing out.

All while this was happening, the engine was running very well. It wasn't coughing/stalling as if it was running rich or lean, it ran just as normal.

I shut the engine down, and started it back up, at which point it stopped spewing the oil. However, after another 5 or so minutes it came back, somewhat inconsistently.

The ambient temperature of the day was somewhere around 35 or so degrees.

Any Help on where to start? I'm confused by it, as the engine was running well and (as smooth as a 2-stroke can run!)

Thanks!

I think it is probably time to do a good decarb on the engines. I know you don't carbs, but obvious signs point to a carbon build up in the exhaust. After doing that you can better tell if there is a problem.
How is your oil usage? What kind of TCW3 are you using. A lot of us have switched to Semi-Synthetic or full Synthetic, lot less smoke.
Check the FAQ's for the procedures for decarb.

Alright! Thanks so much.

I found this FAQ about oil leaking around the lower-unit. Which exactly describes the problem I'm experiencing. (it is definetly oil through exhaust)

Obviously I should have checked there first, but I had no Idea that this is a common enough problem on a 2-stroke. I figured it was a sign of something wrong.

Oil usage is high, same with fuel usage compared to what's probably typical for these engines. The engines have seemed like in the past ~2 years they've lost some "punch"
Most of the oil I'm using is regular oil. I like the sounds of a full or semi-synthetic oil with less smoke!

I didn't however find the de-carbon Faq you referred do. Do you mind pointing me in a direction that might help to learn more about de-carboning a 2stroke EFI engine.

Thanks again!

This should take you to it. It is just a matter of getting a very strong dose of SeaFoam or similiar product into the system and then a soak time, and repeat 2-3 times until it clears up.
You could pull the plugs and spray Deep Creep into the cylinder , but both would be preferred because you get the cleaning effect of the cleaner running through the fuel injection/carb systems.
