Hi, great site with tones of valuable information. I have a 1967 Evinrude Fastwin 18hp, which belonged to my wifes grandfather. It had been in storage for 20 years, and rebuilt around 10 years ago by a local shop. It sat another 5 or so years until I got ahold of it, and it served me well on numerous trips. The motor sat two years until last month when I put fresh gas in, cranked it up and motored away to my duck hunting spot. After my hunt, it fired up and blew out a combination of smoke/oil nasty enough to rival the Exxon Valdeez spill. I noticed water was not pumping out and the unit getting warm, so I shut it down and rowed back to the launch.

I pulled the gearbox drain plug back at home, and had a few ounces of clean water trickle out, followed by a milky oil/water concoction. I pulled the lower unit off, the impellar looks okay (but I'll replace it anyway).

So, any thoughts? I'm guessing a seal somewhere in the lower unit, hopefully not in the gearbox.

I do not have a manual yet, I'll try to find one today. Thanks in advance!

Here is the manual that you will want.

"http://cgi.ebay.com/1967-Evinrude-18HP-Fastwin-Service-Repair-Manual_W0QQitemZ320148874612QQihZ011QQcategoryZ423QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQ_trksidZp1638.m118.l1247QQcmdZViewItem"

You could always do a pressure test to determine the faulty seal, but I would probably do a full seal job, as if 1 goes, the others arent usually far behind.

you can get the seal kit here, part number 2684 for $19.95

Good catch not running it hot.Can be terminal.These older design motors will belch smoke,and fuel residue.As far as water in the gearcase;
it could be as simple as the gaskets on the fill and drain plugs. allways use new.Never remove the little phillips head screw.Lube should be changed at least yearly and allways before winter.
There are a number of seals in the gearcase that could cause leaks.Prop shaft,drive shaft,shift rod.and the gearcase gasket on the split gearcase.I would refill with new gaskets on the plugs and run her a few hours and check the lube.

Just my 2 cents: I'd make sure I fixed my water pump problem and had good cooling and water circulation before I tackled the l.u. seals. Then I'd put a new seal kit in as others suggested. Be prepared to get the right tools to do it. i.e. cheap seal puller. The prop seal and drive shaft seal can be a pain to remove.
Good luck,

Thanks for the info, I think I'll do the impellar, replace fluids and drain plug gaskets and see how she goes. I really don't want to face the cost/time of a gearbox teardown, as the spring bass bite is just around the corner! I'll post back with my findings.

Tight lines,
Ben
