Hi,

Has anyone got any experience of running a 2 stroke 60hp Yamaha on these type of oils? Is there any advantage or disadvantage in using them over regular mineral marine two stroke oils?

Thanks in advance.

Well I dont. I have always used a Shell oil. So whats the big deal with the Yamaha stuff? It's just a regular 2 stroke marine oil badged by Yamaha.

The original question was a clue? To get an anwer on how synthetics perform. I understand they have good burning characteristics. Less soot less smoke emissions etc. But that so far is heresay. I have never used it.

I was hoping to hear from real users experience and not go by the manufacturers claims.

Take out Yamaha if you prefer to save confusion I have a few engines but used this section of the forum as I have a Yamaha in my collection.

Thanks for the cryptic replies anyway. Maybe I should try another of my engine makes on that synthetic question on other parts of the forum? I'm surprised nobody has an opinion or something they can add or say about synthetic oils though?

I have used all three types of oil in my outboards for years with no issues whatsoever. Synthetic and semi-synthetics produce a tad less smoke and in my view are simply better lubricants, seem to leave fewer carbon deposits, and if you happen to operate a lot at slow speeds (such as trolling), plug fouling is not an issue but then with newer engines that's not much of an issue anyway. My car and tow vehicle also see nothing but Mobil 1 synthetic. The last batch of two-stroke oil I bought was last winter at my local WalMart. Pennzoil semi-synthetic was $7.00/gallon and I bought every gallon they had left. It currently is priced at $12.00/gallon which is about half what all the other suppliers are priced at. That's my opinion and I'm stickin' to it. :)

I use Yamalube 2-M in my Yamaha engines. It is a semi-synthetic oil. Independent tests have confirmed that it has a very complete and superior additive package than all other 2 stroke semi-synthetic oil. All oils are not the same despite the fact that they may meet some minimum standard. I believe it is cheaper to spend a little more for a quality oil than to spend thousands for mechanical repairs.

Thanks Silvertip and BruceAML that is handy input.

However I'm a bit sceptical on the semi or part synthetics as there seems to be no standard of manufacture that qualifies them to be lbelled synthetic.
They all come out well in tests though, so it seems that there is no "bad" oils on the market.

In tests I have read that the tester, other than being told the oil was part synthetic could nor confirm that this was what it was. A situation of which I find quite bizarre!
This one for example: http://www.bassboatcentral.com/oilreports1.htm

and this one: http://www.sea-doo.net/techarticles/oil/oil.htm

This one is snowmobile orientated but neverthless useful info: http://www.snowgoer.com/output.cfm?id=1051903

for the amount your actually gonna consume per year why bother?
I ran my 120 VRO jonny rude on tech 2000 for 7 years with no issues.
averaged 100 hours or so per month.
most yamahas will go on any TCW-3 rated oil.
the only ones I balk at are ones with O2 sensors as I cant say what the additive package will do to it.

I sort of recall that Yamaha does not recommend a full synthetic oil in 2 stroke outboard engines. They do recommend full synthetic oil in 4 stroke outboards.

As originally stated "Less smoke emissions." Enviromental Pollution?

If it reduces that, it sound's to me a good reason for using it.

Hi This is what Yamaha say about it online.

YAMALUBE SUPER 2 STROKE OUTBOARD MOTOR OIL(biodegradable) is a full synthetic, ashless and biodegradable lubricant designed for water-cooled 2 stroke engines.

truth be known, yamaha will recommend yamalube as will honda or nissan or even evinrude recommend their in house lubricants yet they all come from the same sources. i don't believe yamaha has their own refinery nor any other outboard manufacturer. i'd just go with a tc3 lube. Ed

Re: Synthetic or Semi Synthetic Two Stroke oil in my Yamaha.

what I am trying to say is almost all precision blend yamaha motors incorperate a variable ratio oil injection based on throttle angle and engine RPM.
the pump is calibrated using Yamalube and the additive package that yamaha specified at refining/blending.
will others work? most likly.
but for the amount most consumers use its just best to waste the extra 10 dollars a year and let it ride.
nothing like seeing a pair of 250 HP OX66 outboards,with O2 sensors,on the back of a 33 grady running wal-mart oil :).
why risk 25,000 dollars worth of engines to save 10 dollars a gallon on an unknown oil additive package.

No argument there. After having a chat with the Amsoil Company owner over in England, I have gone over to Amsoils Sabre HP Injector 2 Stroke Fully Synthetic. The viscosity would appear to be the same as the Shell mineral oil I was using.
The Jury will be out for a while on any long term wear issues, but I can say that having cleared out all the current mineral 2 stroke and bled through the pump to remove all traces of the old oil. The exhaust smoke is dramatically reduced and as a bonus smells better!

Re: Synthetic or Semi Synthetic Two Stroke oil in my Yamaha.

I previously owned a boat and waverunner business in Florida and ran about 5 55gal drums a year of yamahalube (non synethic).I only had about rebuilds 1 or 2 moter rebuilds a year out of 12 2stroke rentals. I sold the business to some Englishmen and told them about my pm's and what ever you dont change the 2stroke oil.Well the did listen. They changed to Amsoil synthetic, the 2nd day sized 1Yamaha XL700 waverunner the next week 1 90 hp evinrude ,1 115 Yam, 1 115 johnson. The next week a 115 johnson and two Yam XL 700 waverunners.Yes they mixed it right. I sware by Yamalube and proved it 30 thousand gal a year I would personaly mix up.

I use Amsoil interceptor full synthetic 2 cycle. Amsoil is one of the few oils I trust to not have to read the API standards on the back to make sure it will work for what's written on the front, not to mention, it's Amsoil. If it's not number one, it's close. So I put it in both of my Evinrude 2 cycle outboards (both are vintage), my truck (5w30) and don't worry about a thing. Sure a plug can still foul out and what not, but if something goes wrong I'd put money on, it wasn't cause the Amsoil crapped out or failed to perform. Also... for the cost it's like $10 a us quart, that's half the summer boating season for me so not that bad... it's quality overkill. I like quality overkill. I can see something cheaper if you put on a lot more hours though. Don't get too caught up in branding and they can claim that Yamaha works better in a Yamaha and it'd be hard to prove them wrong but.... if I had to bet (which I don't), I'd bet on Amsoil before Yamaha.
