I'm in the process of restoring a 71 starcraft aluminum boat. The trailer needs work as well. I think all the rollers and some of thier supports need to be replaced. I was thinking of converting to a bunk style. Is this worthwhile....(cost of a new trailer over 1000). Also, im getting ready to take the boat off the trailer to work on it. Any suggestions for an easy way to do this?

I assume you mean not leaving the boat in the water, rather on land?

ya, definately on land, putting the hull in water at this point would probably not go so well...

How many brackets do you think one would need for a 5'-6' bunk board holding a 15'-16' aluminum boat and should they be slightlt angled in towards the centerline of the trailer or should they lie flat?

Re: roller to bunk

i put brackets on every cross member. leave extra length on the stern, allows you to shift the boat on the trailer, keeping support under the transom. brackets should the straight up.

Re: roller to bunk

gunner, I have a similar trailer and very similar boat....i think i'm gonna go with three brackets for each bunk....like TD says thats one for every crossmember (on my trailer at least). I would think that would be plenty of support for a 2x4, after all that boat isn't too heavy

PS, i'm at pretty much the same point you are on the boat...just put in a new transom now i'm getting to the new deck....i have a post in restoration forum under '71 starcraft restoration....i'm hopin to get some pics up there soon...

Re: roller to bunk

almost forgot....TD also left a link on this thread for the bolster brackets that support the bunk boards....the main bracket is totally upright, but the part that actually holds the bunk to the main bracket allows for angling the bunk slightly to better fit the hull

Re: roller to bunk

those are for flat bunks, which keeps the boat lower, so you don't have to back as far at the ramp, also use 2x6 for bunks, when flat.

Re: roller to bunk

I guess I should've specified that I was wondering if the bunks themselves should be canted towards the centerline of the trailer. It seemed like the best way, but I wanted to make sure.
