I removed the head tonight on my lark 40 and noticed a deep worn gash on the very bottom of the lower cylinder. This explains the very low (60lbs) compression. The piston has worn almost all the way through the cylinder wall. Any ideas would be helpful. thanks...

Re: Damaged cylinder

I wouldn't fool with it - there are too many powerheads for these motors kicking around. Surf Ebay and used part sites for a powerhead with decent compression values. You will either find an immediately serviceable powerhead or one that is a much better candidate for a rebuild. While you are looking for a replacement, pull the carb, starter, fuel pump, water pump etc. and start rebuilding them. That will enable you to get the motor going quickly once you do locate the PH.

Re: Damaged cylinder

Thanks. I bought it because the fuel pump .carb and water pump as well as new wires .coils and tune up had already been done a year before. I wanted an engine I didnt have to do much to before I could use it.(have alot of other projects waiting is the reason) I will check though as sujested for another power head.thanks

Post pictures of the gash.

The rebuild experts may have you on your way for less with some ideas. Dhadley is well versed in rebuild procedure.

Boy, that sounds bad...
If you have a digital camera, save 'em to your computer. Click on the paperclip icon above your post, or click on manage attachments below, use the browse option, find your pics, open them, choose attach. You're done. But be sure to compress 'em down or they won't load. I right click on my pic, choose open with....whatever, and when I save the pic again, I choose the resize option and pic webblog size.
Hope you can figure out my ramblings,
JBJ

If the wrist pin came loose, it will make a deep groove such as that in the bottom of the cylinder wall. Not an inch wide though. Assume you are guessing at the measurement? It will have a nice rounded radius at the end of the groove.

I believe you zoomed in on the problem.I wont buy anything else based on receipts and a good story. The guy better be glad I let it go..325.00 isnt much for an engine but he swore it ran well and thats not true. 25 cents is too much. Now I have to try and unload it but I plan to be honest.
