So I'm going to be in the Orlando area a while and was just wondering if anyone had any tips (restaurants, sights to see besides disney whom I boycott, things to do, etc.).

Yeah, we're planning on doing a day at universal/islands of adventure. I'm not too keen on theme parks though. Mostly because I'm too tall. My legs are so long, I can't fit on most rides. We have a dollywood here, last time I went, I could only ride one ride, and even that one, I had to sit up front where there was two inches of extra leg room.

Re: Orlando

seaworld is worth a shot. also a day trip to Bush Gardens. Cypress Gardens, the old famous water ski show, is close. better and more relaxing than the theme parks.

Check out the Peabody Hotel and it's ducks on line in Orlando..... good resturant......

If you go to Disney be careful what you eat..... I hear they have rodents .... it's actually a People Trap controled by a Mouse.

Sea World is very enjoyable for all ages.......

I agree on the Cypress Gardens is nice and re-opened. My family lives in Winter Haven and many have worked there over the past 35 years.... it's about 25 minutes from Disney and nice to see. Good water ski show.

You could spent a month in the Orlando Area and never see it all since it is constantly growing and changing.

Re: Orlando

I'll gve you a different take.

I was just down there a couple weeks ago for a conference. I had 1 day off and decided to get two of my buddies and go bass fishing. We chartered a guide in polk county about 45 min from I Drive. We caught about 30 - 40 bass that day. After we told the stories; he got called for 6 more charters for the week.

I think it was $300 + tip for 7hrs.

If interested, I'll gladly give you the guys contact info and look up his site.

We're staying in the Remada Orlanda on International drive. It's right down near Universal as I understand it. We got tickets to Universal and Islands of adventure. We've got 5 days including travel and errands, so we'll be in Orlando 3 days. We're going to hit up Universal and the Islands of Adventure one full day, then go to the beach, and maybe do some Pier fishing somewhere around Coco beach the next day. We thought about doing a charter, but are going to have the youngun with us, and I always feel uncomfortable enough as it is on someone else's boat, so I just wouldn't feel comfortable at all taking him out with us, and we don't have any child-care options available there.

So it sounds like everyone recommends Cypress Gardens or Sea World for the 3rd day... Having grown up in Washington State, orcas are no big deal for me... but I don't know what else they have. So maybe Cypress will be the ticket.

Sounds intriguing... got an extra day today, so now I'll either spend 4 days down there, or get a day to recover from the trip. That's a tough call. I do like having time to unpack though.

We've been down to Lakeland a few times and can do that in 10 hours, but that's usually driving at night with much less traffic. This will be the first time driving during the day, plus we have a stop to make in Atlanda on the way down, so you might be right. Either way we won't stop 'til we get there, and should arrive sometime late Friday night. Even at 16 hours, that would get us there by midnight.

Re: Orlando

It's only about an hour from Orlando to the Kennedy Space Center. Nasa has a nice space museum at the main gate and tours of the center. You can also check their launch schedule here. http://www.nasa.gov/missions/highlights/schedule.html

PERFECT! I had checked for launches before, no launches... we'll just miss the shuttle launch on the 11th... too bad. I love the shuttle, and will surely cry when it's retired. Didn't know about the museum and tours at all though, so we'll go do that for sure.
