installing a tach

what do i need to do to install a tach. i don't have one but want to know what my motor is doing.

Tachs are pretty generic. You buy the tach and follow the installation instructions. It amounts to drilling a hole in the dash for tach. There are four wires to connect. One for the light. One for ground, One for +12V when the ignition switch is on, and one for the "sense" (the actual tach signal). All of those wires are generally included in the wire harness for your engine. Since we have no idea what engine you have that's about all we can offer you at this point.

i have an '86 bass tracker with a '86 Mercury 50hp. are there any other gauges i should try to have?

The Mercury probably has a round plug at the controls for a special mercury tach adapter. At least my 94 Mariner did with Quick Silver controls.

As far as other gauges, I like a water pressure gauge. After installing a new water pump impeller you can see what normal pressure is for your engine.

Also a volt gauge will give hints to bad batteries or charging system.
